Earth Day 2024

It’s Earth Day! Yes, the 22nd of April, the day we all take a little glance around and remember that we’re standing on a planet that’s evolving and revolving at nine hundred miles an hour.

Earth Day 2024
“We’re a small studio that works with industry giants, so wherever we can, we try to use our influence to educate and inspire clients towards a new, greener way of doing things.”

Tangent has a long history of delivering projects with wide societal and environmental impact. In the last few years alone we’re proud to have played a role in the launch of several decarbonisation focussed, climate conscious brands and campaigns that, like us, seek a better future. We’re a small studio that works with industry giants, so wherever we can, we try to use our influence to educate and inspire clients towards a new, greener way of doing things.

Our friends at Levy UK&I launch their Sustainability Journal today, which has been a major collaboration for us this year. We’ve worked with them previously on several projects including their environmentally conscious catering strategy for COP26 in Glasgow, and were delighted to work with them on a distinctive brand for their climate conscious article series.

A massive part of Levy’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions is reducing food waste, so we were inspired by food itself, creating a series of marks to house content and to style posts. We used real produce that was going to waste: lettuce, carrots, potatoes, sweetcorn, watermelon, spaghetti and more to create a series of landscapes, patterns, and abstract scenes resulting in textures and a colour scheme that’s comfortingly earthy and familiar.

Other sustainability-minded clients we’ve worked with on large scale branding projects include BE-ST, an innovation centre that exists to accelerate the built environment’s transition to zero carbon by 2045. We worked with them on their name and brand strategy and identity, as well as activation across social, print and digital. We also worked on the brand identity for IDRIC, the Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre, as well as establishing the HeatSource brand, a collaborative knowledge hub exploring opportunities in low carbon heat.

Other clients that feel worth mentioning on Earth Day include Gen Zero, a research project which aims to deliver a new ultra-low carbon building standard for UK schools as well as Energy Pods, an initiative which supports school buildings with fossil fuel free heat solutions. We’ve worked for many years with ORE Catapult, the UK’s leading technology innovation and research centre for offshore renewable energy. Transforming Timber is a collaborative R&D project we branded which aims to make renewable Scottish timber a competitive construction method.

Earth Day 2024
“Our clients are large and operate globally, so our most impactful role is to educate, advise and improve their impact on the planet.”

And in the lead up to COP26 we also branded Sustainable Glasgow, a partnership organisation which aims to make Glasgow one of the greenest cities in Europe, and People Make Glasgow Greener, a website we designed which helped prepare Glasgow’s inhabitants for the global climate summit happening on our doorstep.

Our clients are large and operate globally, so our most impactful role is to educate, advise and improve their impact on the planet - as well as being selective about the types of work we take on. On this Earth Day it’s important to remember the principles we hold dear as a studio, and the choices we make to work with clients that are accelerating transformative innovation in society and the environment.
