The International Network of Street Papers is an organisation that tackles the issue of homelessness by supporting and developing street paper projects all over the world. It spans over 100 papers from 34 countries, including The Big Issue here in the UK, and has a combined readership of 5 million.
“The approach gives an insight into the resilience vendors show in the face of numerous challenges and obstacles.”
INSP is one of Tangent’s longstanding clients, having first worked with them in 2015 to develop their website. The organisation asked us to help them conceive a campaign style for ‘Vendor Week’, an annual celebration of the 9,000+ vendors around the world selling street papers at any one time. Each one of these men and women – in 35 countries – is using their local street paper as a way to work themselves out of poverty.
The paired-back design focusses on the life experiences of vendors, using their own words or those of the people who know them best.
The approach gives an insight into the resilience vendors show in the face of numerous challenges and obstacles - from rampant criminalisation tactics, through discrimination and poor access to housing, to the threat posed by an increasingly volatile climate and the dangers of sleeping on the street.
Prominent figures – celebrities, politicians, business leaders – shadow vendors in a bid to raise awareness and help boost vendor sales.
