September 2024

September will remain the most mysterious of months because we mostly spent it working on a pitch we must currently keep confidential. Here’s what we can talk about though.

“The exhibition is inspired by the father and daughter’s changing lines of communication during the pandemic lockdowns, and features 300 works by 90 artists including Tracey Emin and Louise Bourgeois.”

A new exhibition has just opened at Towner Eastbourne, who we’ve been working with on their year-round and exhibition collateral since we developed the brand for last year’s Turner Prize. This show, curated by veteran BBC broadcaster David Dimbleby and his daughter Liza, is in celebration of the former’s appointment as president of Towner Gallery. The exhibition, Drawing the Unspeakable, is inspired by the father and daughter’s changing lines of communication during the pandemic lockdowns, and features 300 works by 90 artists including Tracey Emin and Louise Bourgeois. We’ve worked for several months to create the visual identity of the exhibition, including dressing the venue with bespoke, thought provoking banners, and producing pamphlets and other printed collateral that accompanies the show. The exhibition is open until 27th April – make sure and visit if you're in the south east over the coming months.

We invited a group of young people from Aberlour, Scotland's Children's Charity, to join us in the studio this month to collaborate on a celebratory logo marking the organisation's 150th anniversary in 2025. This new logo will do more than just reflect the values of the charity or the lives they impact — we’re working with the group of 13-17 year olds to co-design a mark that’s for them and by them. Our first session got them thinking about branding and logo design, sharing their thoughts about Aberlour and its work, and creating starting points with drawing, collage and more. We’ve written about this here if you want to read more.

Speaking of anniversaries, the city is gearing up for Glasgow 850th birthday celebrations and with less than 100 days to go Glasgow City Council has revealed some of their celebratory programming, including a three-day music event, a pop up social history exhibition and a food trail. We’ll write about this in more detail shortly, but in the meantime you can check out the BBC’s coverage of the news here.

We had company in the studio this month in the form of Dylan Chalmers, a very nice recent graduate of DJCAD who helped out on several projects and generally was a pleasure to have around - it was particularly brilliant to have in the room with us during the Aberlour session. We’ll be keeping an eye out for whatever Dylan does next.

Our co-founder, Andrew was a guest speaker at the first ever Curio event – an evening of short talks and creative chat. The event was titled ‘The Tasting Menu’ – more speakers, shorter talks. Curio is about hearing different perspectives on curiosity and creative thinking from a range of different perspectives. Andrew talked about how a ‘learn by living’ mentality has opened up lots of opportunities, interesting experiences and new learnings. More people turned up than any of us imagined and there was a great buzz about the place.

And finally, the Homeless World Cup Tournament took place this month - we’ve written lots about this recently. Needless to day it was a brilliant week of the beautiful game, and congratulations to the Mexico teams for a clean sweep of the top prizes - this tournament marked the Mexico Women’s team’s ninth Homeless World Cup title (and seventh consecutive title) while for the men’s team it was their fifth victory. Looking forward to Oslo 2025 already.
