Homeless World Cup Tournament kicks off this weekend

The 2024 Homeless World Cup tournament - the first to be hosted in Asia - kicks off this weekend. 52 teams and 500 players will compete across 8-days in the world class sporting spectacle in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. This week of fun, festivities and football are the culmination of year-round work supporting the organisation’s ultimate goal of ending homelessness for good. You can stream the Homeless World Cup on FIFA+ and on YouTube.

The logo for the 2024 tournament is designed to capture the spirit of the host city and people and to show audiences that the Homeless World Cup is more than a tournament.

The Homeless World Cup has had an amazing build up to tournament time, with some huge developments happening for the charity this year, including the March release of the Netflix movie The Beautiful Game, starring Bill Nighy and directly inspired by the 2010 Homeless World Cup tournament. There’s also a 2023 Korean language Netflix movie inspired by the Homeless World Cup, Dream, if you want to make a movie night of it before the tournament kicks off!

This summer HWC also signed an historic memorandum of understanding with FIFA which confirms FIFA’s official support, including supplying materials, equipment, medals and trophies, as well as an agreement to broadcast the tournament on the streaming platform FIFA+. At almost the same time as this agreement was being signed at a special ceremony held at FIFA’s Olympic Headquarters in Paris, members of the Seoul 2024 Korean squad were meeting with two of the most famous football clubs in the world, FC Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur.

Bayern Munich invited the Korean players to join their coaching team for a training session, while the Seoul 2024 Korean men's team were invited to meet with Spurs’ Destiny Udogie and Guglielmo Vicario at Mokdong Futsal Stadium in July. The Korean players led a teach-in of the tournament’s unique rules before taking part in a traditional Homeless World Cup match and penalty shootout.

We’ve been working with the Homeless World Cup for years, first refining their brand identity before redeveloping their website, so we were delighted when they invited us to work on the logo for the 2024 tournament. We’ve written previously about the development of this logo; designed to capture the spirit of the host city and people and to show to audiences worldwide that the Homeless World Cup is more than a tournament.

The Homeless World Cup has become a valued partner over the years and we always enjoy working with them. As clients go, they’re the perfect intersection of our interests as a studio; the sectors we come back to again and again: charity, sports, and events. We look forward to many more years of working with them - and we’re looking forward to catching the games this weekend!
