Tangent

December 2023

Once again the end of the year is upon us, bringing with it parties, deadlines, and a lot of Christmas lo-fi music in the studio.

December 2023
"Over this year we’ve worked on brilliant projects that we’re really proud of. We can already see the case studies popping up on pitch documents for years to come…"

It’s been a year of significant change for Tangent, with major staffing changes for the first time in many years - though you wouldn’t know it from our Christmas night out, where old faces appear more frequently than glasses are refilled. We bade a fond farewell this year to designers Jack and Graeme, both now juggling freelancing and fatherhood, as well as designer Kat, now working in London - and welcomed four new members of the team. Lisa, DC, Lizzy and Dahl are now indispensable – not least because of the baked goods, lovely dogs and general immaculate vibes they all bring to the studio. The studio was of course also delighted to see the triumphant return of this writer from maternity leave.

Over this year we’ve worked on brilliant projects that we’re really proud of. We can already see the case studies popping up on pitch documents for years to come…

We designed the visual identity for the brand new Perth Museum, which opens in spring 2024, so we can’t say too much more about it here - but that’s been a brilliant project that we’re really proud of, and we’ve been working on something else for the launch recently that we’re excited about.

Our work with Arena began in early in 2023. Arena is a leading event services company, providing bespoke temporary structures and interiors to some of the most prestigious live events in the UK, Europe, Middle East & Asia. We worked with them on a new logo and brand identity which launched earlier this month! Case study to follow in the new year.

Another highlight of our year was our work for the Turner Prize - one of the world’s most prestigious and widely-known awards for visual arts. The exhibition is a brand new, unique experience, re-imagined each year by the hosting institution; Towner Eastbourne in Sussex for 2023. We applied the campaign identity across the exhibition environment, and were delighted to attend the award ceremony on the 5th of December, where Jesse Darling was honoured with the prize for his sculptures, made from everyday detritus to reflect the political instability of modern Britain.

"We also created the wayfinding and dressed Glasgow for the 2023 UCI cycling world championships, the largest cycling event in the world, which the city hosted this summer."

As a studio, Tangent cut its collective teeth in the global event sector, and we had the opportunity to work on several more events projects in 2023. Formula E is a single-seater motorsport championship for electric cars, and this year we created comprehensive guidelines and a wayfinding system which will roll out in early 2024. We also created the wayfinding and dressed Glasgow for the 2023 UCI cycling world championships, the largest cycling event in the world, which the city hosted this summer.

We finished up projects with clients we’ve worked with for a while, like the new identity forEastside People, the refreshed identity and website for Homeless World Cup, and the 2023 Art of St Andrews release from Eden Mill. We delivered the annual campaign for the Edinburgh International Book Festival again this summer - always a pleasure of a project to work on. We also worked with clients Levy Restaurants, who we first collaborated with during COP26, on an internal brand designed to attract and retain high quality staff.

We worked with several new clients on a variety of projects too - we designed an identity and website for the Scottish Refugee Council's New Scots Refugee Integration Strategy, which aims to support refugees and people seeking asylum make a life in Scotland’s communities. We refreshed the identity of Dubai Global, an initiative representing Dubai’s international business community. We designed and created an impact report for the Data Lab, Scotland’s innovation centre for data and AI. We developed a new name and identity for TransportWorks, a consultancy service with a focus on green initiatives in transport.

On the subject of green initiatives - we were delighted again in 2023 to work on several sustainability-focused projects. Amongst others, we comhttps://tangentgraphic.co.uk/a...pleted an identity for IDRIC, an organisation that works to promote research and innovation in the decarbonisation of industry. We worked on a new identity for Energy Pods, who work alongside initiatives like GenZero to create sustainable modular school buildings for a fossil fuel free future. They debuted their new brand at the Education Estates Conference back in October.

And then there are the projects we’re still in the midst of - Little Nook, Enough! Scotland, Hardie Polymers, Perth Museum, Pelion and more are keeping us busy right up to the wire, and we’ll have more on all of them in the new year.

Thanks to all our clients, collaborators and partners for your contributions to our year. It’s been a good one! We’ll see you in 2024.
