Young & Powerful

Young & Powerful is an initiative by Graphic Design Festival Scotland. A national poster competition, celebratory exhibition and series of workshops giving young people aged 8-26 the opportunity to engage with design and inspire their peers.

“We wanted to see people following their gut and representing the world as they see it.”

Tangent was assigned the task of judging the 13-16 category along with four others from the design community. The posters were a mix of digital applications viewed on a projector and original hand rendered designs arranged in series along a wall. Themes included: Celebrate Equality, Get Active, Be Healthy, Care for the Environment, Value Education, Young Power, Improve Scotland. The entries were varied and brilliant.

Judging was based on a range of criteria from clarity of idea to quality of execution, but above all of this we were looking for artwork that was free of the usual conventions and restrictions associated with commercial design. Something that conveyed emotion and didn’t worry about how well it was rendered or how on message it was. We wanted to see people following their gut and representing the world as they see it.

The Young & Powerful Exhibition runs from 23 October – 25th November at The Lighthouse in Glasgow.
